JOB SUMMARY
To perform all laboratory analysis in accordance with the State of Tennessee
Department of Health, Department of Environment and Conservation, the Standard
Methods, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Perform quality assurance on
all laboratory analysis and record keeping. The Laboratory Technician will work
in a trainee role until he/she obtains a Tennessee Grade 2 Distribution
Systems certificate and a Grade 4 Water Treatment Operations certificate. This
position precedes the Laboratory Analyst position. Once necessary qualifications
have been met, the Laboratory Technician will be considered for movement to the
Laboratory Analyst position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a high school diploma or GED.
A Bachelor degree from an accredited university is preferred.
Must have a valid Tennessee Drivers License.
Must have an active telephone number for 24-hour contact.
Must have good leadership and communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Must work toward obtaining a Grade 4 Water Treatment and a Grade 2
Distribution Systems certificate from the State of Tennessee. Initially focus on
the Grade 2 Distribution certificate then the Grade 4 Water Treatment
certificate.
Perform laboratory analyses as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor.
Collect repaired line samples, new line samples, and regular distribution
samples.
Involved in aspects of protozoan analysis including preparation of sampling
equipment and sample processing.
Trained to perform bacteriological analysis and microscopic identification.
Trained to perform chemical analyses.
Trained to perform all necessary laboratory work required for observation and
control of the water treatment plant in accordance with federal, state, and city
guidelines.
Trained to receive the knowledge of and ability to perform all laboratory
analyses which the water treatment plant has been certified to perform and those
analyses that are required to insure compliance with the State and Federal
regulations.
Trained to perform plant calculations for chemical dosages, chemical usage,
flow rates, detention time, chlorine CT values, and all other calculations
necessary for the operations of the water treatment plant.
Trained to perform all necessary distribution sampling and bacteriological
analysis and to be state certified to do so.
Trained to calibrate various hand-held electronic and other equipment.
Trained to understand and use ArcReader software for the distribution system.
Trained to maintain all equipment related to the laboratory at the water
treatment plant to include the calibration of all instruments.
Trained to maintain all in-line analysis equipment related to the laboratory,
water treatment plant, and the distribution system to include the calibration of
these instruments.
Trained to operate and understand the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
System (SCADA); view and print related reports.
Trained to properly maintain distribution flushing program. Flush hydrants as
needed and according to hydrant flushing program and keep accurate records.
Create, enter, and update files on computer for preparing reports,
spreadsheets, historical information, maintenance records and letters.
Maintain sanitary cleanliness of the laboratory and associated facilities.
Trained to maintain records in compliance to federal, state, and city
regulations.
Work safely observing all OSHA, federal, state, and city regulations. Report
any accidents immediately to supervisor or manager.
Correctly wear appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary or
required.
Perform routine maintenance on equipment. Report any malfunctioning equipment
to the supervisor or manager.
Conduct behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively
on customers perception of the Town.
Promote the teamwork environment. Assist co-workers when needed.
Any other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform duties of the Laboratory Supervisor when directed.
May have to work after hours in emergency situations.
Review daily all laboratory records to insure accuracy and completeness.
Collect samples from designated sample sites.
Conduct behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively
on customers perception of the Town facility.
Conduct presentations and/or tours related to the industry.
Must maintain a city cell phone and be available for on-call 24/7.
