Smyrna To Join Cities Nationwide for "America's National Night Out Against Crime"

It's called the Neighborhood Watch event of the year, when the Town of Smyrna joins forces with thousands of other communities nationwide to give crime and drugs a going away party. National Night Out 2008 will be held on Tuesday, August 5th at Lee Victory Recreation Park from 5pm to 8pm.

Neighborhood Watch groups throughout Smyrna will show their stand against crime on Tuesday, August 5th. Neighborhood Watch groups all across the country unite on the first Tuesday of August each year to celebrate National Night Out. The purpose is to forge active crime prevention efforts in neighborhoods, strengthen community-police partnerships, develop better social and communication ties among neighbors, and to discuss and develop solutions to neighborhood issues.

Across the country last year over 34 million Neighborhood Watch members in some 10,000 communities participated in National Night Out, America’s night out against crime. Participating in this event is a great way for you and your neighbors to unite with Smyrna Police to show criminals that you are in charge of your neighborhood and that crime is not tolerated in the Town of Smyrna.

National Night Out is designed to: 1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) Generate support for and participation in, local anticrime efforts; 3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and 4) Send a message to criminals letting them, know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 5 to 8 PM on August 5th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Smyrna and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Plan on joining us at Lee Victory Recreation Park to Give Crime and Drugs A Going Away Party.

Chipper Service / Brush Pick-Up

The Town of Smyrna provides a curb-side chipper / brush pick-up service.  This service is free to all residents of Smyrna. The Streets Department runs the program. The Streets Department which is in the Public Works Division explains that the program is operated with the following guidelines:

1. The pile of brush must be left within four (4) feet of the edge of the road. This allows the crew to have access to the debris without making a mess in the resident’s yard.
2. The pile of brush must not be placed under trees, overhead wires or guy wires so that our equipment can reach it without posing a danger to the operator.
3. The maximum diameter of limbs is six (6) inches. Anything thicker than this will not be picked up.

4. The pile of brush can be no larger than ten (10) feet by ten (10) feet. If you think you will have more than this, consider laying out one pile for now and the other pile the next month.
5. The chipper cannot handle vines, loose leaves or root balls.
6. Do not include in your pile any building materials, plastic, metal, wire, cardboard, paper or glass.
7. If you have hired a commercial tree service, have them haul off the debris. In all likelihood, they are already billing you for it.
8. Leaves can be picked up. Simply put them in bio-degradable bags and leave them at the edge of your yard. Loose leaves will not be picked up.

9.  Do not put pile on street.  If an accident occurs as a result of this, the homeowner will be liable for the damages.
10. There is no need to schedule a pickup. The town is divided into sections and one section at a time is cleaned. The length of time between pick-ups varies depending on the amount of debris in the different sections.   Please keep in mind that this is our busiest time of year.

*Note* The chipper service is a free public service
for the residents and homeowners of Smyrna.
The Town of Smyrna will not pick up anything cut by
a "for profit" trimming or clearing service.
